Traditionally, the Scandinavian colour palette has hovered around the cooler end of the spectrum but in this new Scandi-inspired, single storey, a longhouse in Co. Wicklow, the homeowners took Kerwood Design’s advice and raised the temperature to stunning by introducing a darker note.
‘We looked at a lot of images on Instagram but when we saw samples of Kerwood Design’s work we simply fell in love with their designs,’ says owner Stephanie. ‘When we met designer Ben Kerrigan, we explained that we wanted a modern, Shaker-style kitchen, with a timeless quality. We didn’t want to have to upgrade for a long time! Ben was great, he knew exactly what we wanted to achieve. Although, admittedly in the beginning I wasn’t sure about his suggestion to use the darker Farrow & Ball Railings for the drinks cabinet and bookshelves in the adjoining living room, but in the end, he was right. It’s beautiful and was definitely the right decision.’
Set in an open-plan layout, with lots of windows, the space is flooded with natural light, giving it a beautiful airy and spacious feel.
The unique cabinetry, made with gorgeous driftwood oak internals is a modern take on a classic Shaker and sets the contemporary tone for this fabulous kitchen.
‘The clients had a very clear vision of what they wanted, which essentially was a modern take on a classic Shaker design,’ explains Ben. He continues, ‘But, having said that, they were both open to new ideas. Initially, they were unsure about colour choices and were wary of my idea to use Railings, thinking it would be too dark. But I assured them it would look fantastic, and they trusted my judgement.’
