Renovations That Count
South African Garden and Home|April 2018

It’s not always easy to balance renovations that improve your quality of life and add charm to your property, with those that increase its value. We asked a few industry professionals for their opinions

Renovations That Count

There are a number of renovations that, no matter what, will always be a good investment, while others will be affected by circumstances. Take the drought for example: a borehole, watersaving features, water tanks, and waterwise gardens weren’t drawcards a decade ago, but today, we feel differently.

It may be a tired adage, but it’s still true today: take care not to renovate to your taste, because it may not be somebody else’s. Renovations should have timeless appeal. Aim to create a neutral shell and decorate to your liking with portable accessories, colour, and so on.

A dated home is off-putting and invites prospective buyers to make a cheeky offer. So when renovating, assess what it really needs.

There are a number of elements in a South African home that aren’t considered ‘special’ but a given, security being one example. A top of the range smart security system adds considerably to a home’s saleability.

Myles Wakefield of Wakefields Real Estate in KZN knows what elements clients are prepared to pay for: “Well executed, these appeal to a broader audience. You’ll recoup the money spent, and more.”
