BY DAY A PRIVATE BANKER, BY NIGHT an open-water swimmer, Hong Kong’s Edie Hu completed a solo, 45-kilometre circumnavigation of Hong Kong Island late last year.
Her time of 12 hours, 37 minutes was the fastest by a woman and only three minutes slower than that of Simon Holliday, the fastest man. Both raised funds for Splash – a non-profit organisation that teaches domestic helpers and drivers, underprivileged children and refugees to swim.
Can you give us a taste of what it was like?
We had strong current and it was always in my favour. I felt like I was walking downhill. It didn’t feel like I was exerting a lot of effort. Once in a while, my shoulders would have a tiny bit of pain and I’d ask for ibuprofen. As soon as the drugs kicked in, I’d be like, “Woohoo, let’s get going!” I was really lucky to have this excellent navigator who chartered out the most efficient route and mapped out the currents.
What was going through your mind?
Having a constant change of landscape is very stimulating, like, ‘Oh, there’s IFC,’ and ‘I recognise now I’m in Causeway Bay’. There were little things here and there that let me just enjoy the moment.
Was there a lot of garbage in the water?
