Underwater Drones The Next Frontier?
FOLLOWING THE SOARING popularity of consumer aerial drones – research firm Gartner forecasts the industry to be worth more than US$11.2 billion in 2020 – all eyes are now turning to its sister technology – underwater drones (UWD).
Commercially, UWDs have long since replaced a number of dull, dirty and dangerous sea jobs, such as mapping, water sampling, harbour patrolling and sea mine detection.
Now prices are bringing fully-featured drones within reach of the consumer. Models by major players like JW Fishers, Trident, Deep Trekker and Power Vision already boast functions like wide-angle imaging, wireless piloting, live 3D feeds in HD, obstacle avoidance, automatic retrieval, as well as connection to Android and/ or iOS smart devices while reaching depths of up to 150m. Prototypes like iBubble even promise complete autonomy.
