Oftentimes in Cabin Living magazine, you will see “project” cabins: Those that an owner envisioned and built from the ground up with the help of an architect and builder. Or sometimes you’ll read about a remodel, a story in which an owner saw the potential in an out-of-date fixer-upper, and either on his/her own or with the help of professionals transformed a junker into a gem.

But that’s not always how the story goes; sometimes a would-be cabin owner finds the vacation home of their dreams, already built and simply waiting for them to move in.

Move-in ready

Such was the case with Emily DeGroot and her family, when they were searching for the perfect cabin in the area of Big Sky, Mont., and their realtor mentioned this sweet, brand-new, contemporary cabin. They knew they had found just what they wanted.

The family of three from Chicago was familiar with the area, having spent ample time vacationing there. “We had already owned two previous houses in the Moonlight Basin community,” says DeGroot, “and our 10-year-old son feels that Big Sky is as much his home as Chicago is.” But the family was looking for something different than the large, classic “rustic Montana” houses they had already owned. “Those were more traditional log cabins,” says DeGroot. When she saw the modern lines and simplicity of this new cabin, she was hooked.
