Avoid a spanner in the works with our servicing guide

As we’re coming to the cruising season when boats are becoming operational again, River Canal Rescue recommends owners service their engines and undertake a series of checks. This will help ensure uninterrupted running for the rest of the year:

• Drain off any water in water trap filters and remove water in the tank – this is something that’s generally overlooked, yet is an essential part of maintenance.

• Check the condition of the fan belts – you’ll be able to see if they require changing. Look for cracks and fraying, and if they’re in a good condition, test the tension where possible.

• Check your stern gland. If it’s leaking, it probably needs adjusting, greasing, and possibly repacking.

• Check the oil level and condition of the oil, this will highlight if the engine needs a top-up or service (if the oil’s black).

• Check the antifreeze level - if it’s low, look for any leaks on the system, make any necessary repairs, and ensure levels are topped up to provide adequate protection in cold weather.

• Take time to remove all waste from the bilges and give them a clean. Doing this gives you a better chance of spotting any developing leaks or issues throughout the coming season and it reduces the risk of contaminants being pumped into our waterways.

• Clear the deck drains of any leaves and debris – it will reduce the amount of water that enters the bilge and rust occurring within the gunwhales. We strongly recommend clearing these to the best of your ability and when clean and dry, rust-proof or paint if needed. Doing this helps prevent costly steel replacements in the future.
