Steve McManaman knows how special Paradise can be and the former Liverpool and Real Madrid player believes that Brendan Rodgers’ side can make inroads in this season’s Europa League
STEVE McManaman etched his name in the collective consciousness of Celtic fans with a last-minute wonder goal at Paradise against Wim Jansen’s Hoops side in the UEFA Cup 20 years ago which snatched a 2-2 draw for Liverpool.
It was a result which, ultimately, proved decisive as the goal-less second leg saw the Anfield side progress at Celtic’s expense.
However, his connection to Celtic goes beyond just having played against the club. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid star has always kept a piece of Paradise in his heart and admits to being a big admirer of the club.
Now a TV pundit, McManaman has been keeping tabs on Celtic’s European duties and has been drawn back to Glasgow to once again sample the unrivalled atmosphere at Paradise.
After seeing the performances which the team has put in, McManaman believes the Celts can progress in the UEFA Europa League if they continue playing to the high standards set out by Brendan Rodgers.
He is a big admirer of the Celtic manager and recently caught up with him at Celtic’s Lennoxtown training complex, during which time he also chatted with the Celtic View…
What brings you to Lennoxtown?
It was great to see Brendan again. He was the one who invited me back into the Liverpool fold to get involved with the Academy players, which I still do. It’s down to him that I’m actually still doing that role. It’s great to be up here to see this fantastic facility that Celtic have and to speak about Brendan’s life in Scotland.
What do you and Brendan talk about when you get together?
