Your Academic Major Doesn't Define Your Career
Cosmopolitan Sri Lanka|January 2019

You would’ve heard the phrase, “quit your job and follow your true passion”, but it’s not like you can just do it (Sorry, Nike!). Imagine this: You spend 4 years on a chemical engineering degree before you land your first decent job. And, you realize that this isn’t what you want to do for the rest of your life! But, you don’t have to continue with the job you dislike despite investing time, energy and a lot of money into it. Having said that, trying to pursue your true passion might seem impossible, but with the right push and a little help, better times will be around the corner!

Your Academic Major Doesn't Define Your Career

Don’t Panic

It’s easy to fall into the trap of stressing about your possible career change and start losing faith in life in general. It’s not unusual to have the urge to find immediate answers, but it takes time to identify what you’re meant to do. By stressing out about it you’re not allowing your brain to look at the bigger picture: helping you to follow your dreams. Love photography? Ask yourself whether you’re ready to do it every day and if you’ll still feel the same way about it. If it’s a yes, set down a plan on how you’re going to eventually get there.

Improvise Your Current Job Role

Being unhappy with your current work isn’t always a sign to quit. By making the effort to extend or alter your job role, you can start loving your job.

If you’re currently working as a copywriter and then realised your love for marketing, try networking at events to attract potential clients and give branding advice when you present concepts. Sharon, 24, in advertising did this and she scored a flexible role as a creative strategist, proving that by getting creative with your job (without opting to completely swtich careers), can take you places.
