THIS is an unsung treasure of an AONB, glimpsed by many people only from the interminable jams that blight this stretch of the A303 on the Devon-Somerset border. If motorists were to peel off the choked thoroughfare, they would find themselves lost in a charming, unspoilt, understated pocket of rural England, one of timeless family farms, grazing dairy cattle, narrow lanes, lofty beech hedges and, on the high ground, wonderfully straight, quiet roads. Writing in COUNTRY LIFE in 1958, in an article entitled The little-known hills of the West Country, J. D. U. Ward predicted the area was about to be designated; in fact, it took until 1991, perhaps due to its quieter beauty and lack of famed landmarks.
