GREAT BRITAIN thoroughly justified its reputation as a nation of horsemen at the Tokyo Olympic Games, bringing in five equestrian medals—two of them gold—plus two golds in Modern Pentathlon, in which the phase involving riding an unfamiliar horse can be an unfair lottery and the downfall of many a potential medallist. British female pentathletes with Pony Club backgrounds have a good record in the sport, but in Tokyo, there came a first gold—first individual medal, in fact—for a man, Joe Choong, since the team of Jim Fox, Danny Nightingale, and Adrian Parker triumphed in Montreal in 1976.
