JENNY TRENGOVE gets a rare glimpse into her husband’s working world.
In the six years that I’ve been a trailing spouse, this was the first time I’d accompanied my husband on an overseas business trip. Jakarta isn’t the most glamorous destination among Southeast Asian cities, but it was one of the few I’d not already visited, so with the kids away on a school excursion, I jumped at the chance of an impromptu trip.
I got a real taste of business travel – anonymous hotel rooms, hours spent in planes, airports and taxis, the physical exhaustion of late night arrivals and early morning meetings, the mental exhaustion of navigating a foreign culture and language, the telecommunications frustrations, using every spare minute to catch up on the never-ending emails so he can switch off when back home, and no time to fully enjoy the five-star hotel facilities.
