We find out more about the interesting variety of rice from Assam that was recently given the GI tag
It would be difficult to imagine a meal in an Assamese home without rice. Aside from lunch and dinner, many people even have rice as part of their morning breakfast to help them start their day on a full stomach. And so, it is not surprising that the State is home to different varieties of rice and many farmers spend a lot of time and effort in the fields to ensure that locals can feast on quality rice. In fact, according to recent statement by the Agriculture Minister, Atul Bora, Assam is expected to have a rice harvest of 75 lakh MT in 2018, 23 lakh MT more than previous year’s production.
Recently, a rice native to the State named boka chaul was given the Geographical Indication tag. This is, however, not the first time that the GI tag has been given to a product/produce from Assam; Assamese muga, tea, litchi and Joha rice also have GI tags. Boka chaul is getting a lot of attention lately for its unique method of preparation. It only needs to be soaked in water at room temperature. This variety of rice is sown in mid June, and reaped from November to January.
