Fue en 2010 cuando por vez primera el mundo vio a Diego Schwartzman jugar como profesional del circuito ATP, para 2016 el “Peque” había ganado su primer título, en el ATP 250 de Estambul y, recientemente, se coronó campeón del ATP 250 de Los Cabos, logrando con éste su tercer título. Aprovechamos el marco de este reciente certamen para platicar con el argentino acerca de su carrera tenística durante los casi 10 años que lleva formando parte del circuito profesional.
ESQUIRE: ¿Cómo surge tu pasión por el tenis? DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN:
Mi madre me platicaba que de chiquito jugaba con un cucharón grande contra la pared. En argentina los chicos suelen hacer la mayor cantidad de deporte que pueden, y a medida que fui jugando un poco mejor, me formé profesionalmente.
E: ¿Cuál ha sido el sacrificio más grande que has hecho por tu carrera?
D: Abandonar el colegio, después lo fui terminando por internet, pero creo que dejarlo a los 15 no es tan fácil. La gente te mira de reojo y se pregunta qué está haciendo esta persona, uno empieza a sentir la presión de dejar cosas muy importantes por una carrera en la que no sabes cómo te va a ir.
E: ¿A qué jugadores admirabas de chico?
D: Crecí viendo a una generación de los mejores tenistas en Argentina, como Nalbandian, Coria y mi entrenador Juan Ignacio Chela. Asimilé mucho el verlos en televisión y después conocerlos, aprendí de ellos quién quería ser.
E: Ahora que Chela es tu preparador, ¿qué sientes de tener a alguien que admirabas de chico como parte de tu equipo?
