Jammu & Kashmir
Summer in Kashmir means snow-capped peaks, cornflower-blue skies and tulips in full bloom. The weather is crisp and cool, with nights just nippy enough to justify a dram of Lagavulin under the stars. Start off in Srinagar at The LaLiT Grand Palace, formerly the residence of the Maharaja of J&K, with a facade befitting a Wes Anderson film. Splash out on one of the hotel’s ten tastefully appointed cottages, which open out to the property’s sprawling lawns, ringed by the Himalayas and a view of Dal Lake. If you can tear yourself from these tranquil environs, step out to the city’s exquisite Jamia Masjid, the sacred Hazratbal Shrine and the exquisitely laid out Shalimar and Nishat gardens. Chef Prateek Sadhu of Masque recommends stopping by the quaint teahouse Chai Jaai for Kashmiri kahwa and chochwor, and the Kashmiri thali at Kareema’s.
In a few days, make your way to the stunning Khyber Himalayan Resort and Spa in Gulmarg, a two-hour drive away from Srinagar. Spread over seven acres of unspoiled coniferous forest, the views of the majestic Affarwat Peak will melt your stress away; as will a relaxing Shiatsu at its L’Occitane Spa, while the kids entertain themselves at the Igloo. The resort is a winter wonderland, but summer is equally delightful. The activity concierge can help you plan a gondola ride, a game at the world’s highest golf course, or a light trek to Khilanmarg. Or, instead, explore the nearby meadows on a guided walk. As WH Davies said, “What is this life if, full of care / We have no time to stand and stare.”
