There’s room for more magic as this classic film makes a comeback 54 years after the original took flight.
Mary Poppins, the magical and whimsical nanny, makes her triumphant return from the skies to Cherry Tree Lane after 54 years in the sequel, Mary Poppins Returns. The film, which stars Emily Blunt in the title role (the OG Mary Poppins starred the incomparable Dame Julie Andrews), is being helmed by Academy Award-nominated director Rob Marshall. “I think we’ve been very careful to pay homage to the original, and yet, this is the next chapter. This is my version of her. This is not what Julie Andrews did so brilliantly, this is ultimately going to be my interpretation of her. But, I do feel that Rob very much wanted to pay respect to this film that has impacted people around the world in such a big way,” says Blunt, in an India exclusive interview with Grazia.
The sequel picks up 25 years after the events of the first film, during London’s mid-1930s economic slump. In Mary Poppins Returns, Jane and Michael Banks are adults. However, there are major problems, Michael’s wife has just died leaving him a widower with three children, who are all living in his parents’ old house on No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane. Also, money is tight and he’s about to sell the house.
