Of things I did during lockdown, I’ll confess to trawling through YouTube and I’m mildly ashamed to say it filled many hours.
Being an old ‘petrol-head’, I re-acquainted myself with some Formula One Grand Prix. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, they were compelling not only for the Senna versus Prost or Hill versus Schumacher battles but also our own Martin Brundle who, at the time, was driving for teams like Tyrrell, Brabham, Benetton and McLaren.
I say ‘our own’ because he still lives but a few miles from where he was born in west Norfolk and where he first raced an old banger around a grass track near King’s Lynn. He was just 12 when he got behind the wheel of a Ford Anglia in 1971.
His racing career has seen Martin compete in 158 Formula One races, and make it to the podium on 10 occasions. He has taken part in many different competitions , including winning 14 international sports car races – one of which was the famous Le Mans 24 Hours.
Having interviewed him many times for radio, it was good to catch up with the man who is now better known as a Sky Sports F1 TV commentator.
