“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you!” – Dr Seuss
Do you ever find that you clash with your colleagues or loved ones because you simply can’t understand the reasoning behind their decisions? Do people who stand too close to you make you uncomfortable, or is the thought of spending a night at home alone totally stressful? LOREN STOW unpacks why there may be more to this than just you being a fuss-pot!
A SENSORY PROFILE
There are many reasons why each of us is different, but one of the more interesting roots for our differences lies in our sensory profiles. Everyone person has a unique sensory profile and it is this profile that dictates how they respond to, cope with, and learn from information coming through their sensory system. This response system lies in the base of the brain, which means that it is hardwired and instinctive. Says Dr Annemarie Lombard, founder of Sensory Intelligence ® Consulting, and doctor of health sciences, “A person’s sensory profile will likely not change to a large degree, but their ability to work with the sensory profile they have may become easier if they understand what they’re working with.”
WHAT IS A SENSORY SYSTEM?
Dr Lombard explains that everyone has seven sensory systems, and these systems connect us to the outside world and also communicate to our inner world.
01 Sight and hearing are your information senses. They tell you what’s going on around you, moment by moment.
02 Touch, smell and taste are your social senses. They are more intimate and emotionally-based.
