Maru Almazora de Ocampo shares her family’s yearlong journey from designing the Popemobile to gifting the Holy See with the customized vehicle.
How did your family end up making the Popemobile?
My father Cecilio has been in the automotive manufacturing industry for some time now under the family business, Almazora Motors Corporation. In August 2014, Isuzu Gencars, Inc. gave my brother Conrad a call, asking us to build a Popemobile.
How did you feel about making it?
At first, it was nice and quiet since not many people knew about it. My team and I stayed focused since it remained a top secret project. During the Pope’s visit, my sense of fulfillment and pride reached all levels of the human experience. It was a proud moment for me and my family. I discovered the true meaning of serving God.
