New Idea has learned that vicious rumours are swirling about a secret relationship between Charles’ brother Prince Andrew and Diana around the time she was pregnant with William.

In a new documentary The Diana Story, the Spencer family’s former housekeeper Betty Andrews reveals: “We thought she would be with Prince Andrew.”

Prince Andrew was much closer in age to Diana and was known for his “dashing good looks”, which was said to infuriate Charles.

“This is one royal scandal the palace are desperately trying to shut down,” reveals an exclusive royal source.

“There have been long-standing rumours that Diana and Andrew had a secret romance just before William was born.

“And now there’s talk a new book could even be in the works that will apparently allege that Andrew could even be William’s real father and it’s going to open all these vicious rumours up to the world.

While there is absolutely no basis to the affair speculation, and it’s quite clear the story is a complete fabrication, the bad publicity couldn’t have come at a worse time for the palace.

“With all the furore surrounding Meghan and Kate’s secret feud and all the drama with Meghan, the last thing they need is another scandal – especially one of this magnitude,” continues the insider.
