“I Need A Christmas Survival Plan”

Session one-“I want to protect my baby daughter from our toxic family dynamic”

Fiona* arrived in a fluster. ‘I wasn’t sure I would get here,’ she said. ‘I have a baby. It used to be easy to walk out of the house whenever I wanted – without baby food all over me!’ She grinned. ‘I love being a mum but it has made me think a lot about my upbringing and I’m struggling with that.’

Fiona explained that her mother was a dominant character. ‘She needs to be the centre of attention even if it means starting rows or making unkind remarks about others.’ She took a deep breath. ‘I want to shelter baby Ivy* from anger and unkindness. I don’t think about what my mother’s behaviour does to me, but I don’t want it for Ivy.’

In fact, hope can be one of the most powerful tools in your psychological toolbox, and may well be the antidote that we all need to today's chaotic world.
