He is a Bollywood favourite today. But back in 2001, he was better known as a television artiste, who was slowly emerging on the Tamil film firmament. R Madhavan has always been different and likes to live life by his own terms. Marrying while being on top of his game, for instance, and making no bones about it. No amount of success since then has had any impact on his core nature either. He is as adorable as he was in 2001, when this Society interview with the actor and his wife Sarita took place.
Former tele-star Madhavan has become an icon in the south. Maniratnam’s new protege is Chennai’s current fad. The craze he generates in the south is being compared to the kind Hrithik Roshan did with his first movie. Madhavan, whom college going teenagers refer to as ‘Maddy’, is truly happening.
Madhavan is a social person—thoroughly snazzy and suave. You can spot him at Vijay’s Café sipping a beer with his wife—(not many stars are seen in this ‘intellectual’ joint with the exception of Arvind Swamy); you can find him at the net centre chatting with fans or even spending an evening judging a beauty contest or doing a commercial for television.Madhavan does not believe in creating an invincible aura around him, nor does he sport dark glasses in the night and throw starry fits. He is young, energetic, charming and witty.
Added to these is his remarkable intelligence. He won a national championship in public speaking—and is a versatile conversationalist.
Madhavan is married, and flaunts his wife Sarita in social circles, unlike other Tamil heroes. He loves partying and socialising, and again, unlike other Tamil heroes, he is the first one to model for national commercials. He is a Tamilian married to a Maharashtrian, and flips through life without being hassled by traditional constrictions.
