Photographer Biju Gopal gives us an overview of how he photographs interior spaces.
My journey into photography began with a chance visit to a photography exhibition by the students of the J. J. School of Arts. The moment I entered the exhibition hall, I was hooked, and knew that this was my calling. At that time I was pursuing my Bachelor in Mass Media and wanted to become a copywriter, hence it was quite difficult to convince my parents about shifting careers. But then, the bug had already bitten me, and I quickly enrolled myself at the National Institute of Photography at Dadar, and there under the tutelage of the respected (late) Mr. Manohar Desai, I learned photography, and after a few years of assisting some commercial photographers, I ventured out on my own as a freelancer.
Through the years I’ve had the privilege of shooting across genres of fashion, advertising, interiors and architectural photography – catering to some renowned brands like Reliance SMART, Big Bazaar, IDFC Bank, Hiranandani, All Cargo Logistics, Xylos and interior designers like Purple Backyard,
Limehouse Design studio etc. Of late, I have focussed my energies towards interiors and architectural photography. There is a time when you suddenly have a sense of peace while shooting something, and I found that here. It’s a delight to see and photograph such wonderfully designed spaces. There is so much thought behind each designed house. It is like a glimpse into the owners’ and the designers’ mind. I love the fact that I’m able to use my sense of design and composition in what I do.
