Social media doesn’t have an age limit.
Life online is a fast-moving forever evolving experience that doesn’t come with an instruction manual. Keeping up with everything from the latest apps to the latest etiquette can be a headache, even if you’ve spent your life plugged to the internet.
Most of us spend hours prodding our smartphone every day, but sometimes we struggle to stay on top of each new expression or exciting new social media platform.
So if keeping up with social media is hard for young adults, then it must be that much harder for people a generation or two older. You’d imagine it would be so impenetrable that they just wouldn’t bother – and yet it’s the opposite. The number of more mature individuals using social media over the past 12 months has more than doubled to one in four.
Ten years ago they’d have probably been called ‘silver surfers’, only nobody talks about surfing the internet anymore, so the collective noun seems to be ‘Instagrans’. As in, grannies who use Instagram.
