The actor, Emmy-nominated five times (and counting?) for her role as type-A Amy Brookheimer on just-wrapped Veep, chats about red-carpet risks, what young girls need to know about beauty, and the $2 hair product that works wonders.
Q: On Veep, Amy is an influential Washington operative whose look is quite plain. Do you think women in power need to downplay their femininity to be taken seriously?
A: Yes, but part of me also wonders whether dressing a certain way helps us take ourselves seriously. Women on Capitol Hill don’t have many visual inspirations for how to dress with individuality. Michelle Obama started to change that. After the Obamas moved into the White House, I noticed that all of these women who’d always dressed conservatively were suddenly wearing Anthropologie. It’s bizarre that in our society, we often measure a woman only by the clothes or makeup she chooses. We really got into this during the last season of the show, especially with my character.
