The Malaysia Philharmonic Orchestra marks its 20th anniversary in style.
The Malaysia Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with a special season that opened last month and will continue until December. After the opening gala performance at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas in August – which featured pianist Tengku Ahmad Irfan, the MPO’s Youth Brand Ambassador – music fans can look forward to a plethora of concerts that appeal to myriad tastes. September, for example, kicks off with Semalam di Malaya (15 & 16 September), a celebration of Malaysia’s 61 years of independence with music songs by, among others, P Ramlee, Ahmad Merican and Alfonso Soliano.
October opens with a musical and visual extravaganza – National Geographic: Symphony for Our World (6 & 7 October) pairs stunning natural history footage compiled from the magazine’s 130 years of continuous reporting with an original symphony composed by Bleeding Fingers Music. The MPO will be joined by the Malaysian Institute of Art’s Mixed Voices Choir in this powerful homage to the wonder and beauty of Plant Earth. October also sees the return of pianist extraordinaire Stephen Hough to the stage, where he will share the stage with the MPO and conductor Mark Wigglesworth in Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Shostakovich’s Symphony No 8 (20 & 21 October).
