Four SA Sports Stars on Making a Career of the Sports They Love
‘Unlike many top-ranking sportsmen and women who start their sporting careers when they’re kids, I didn’t start CrossFit training until much later. I was 24 when my brother introduced me to CrossFit in 2008 and I’ve loved it ever since.
‘I’d always enjoyed sports and training, and I’d been involved in other sports before, but CrossFit brought a whole new challenge to my training routine and it really changed my lifestyle.
‘I’m a competitive person and I always want to be the best at everything I do. So when I first started CrossFit training, I thought it wouldn’t take long at all for me to become the best at that too. But because it was a challenging new sport, I found myself constantly falling short of finishing at the top. It was so frustrating, but it was an important lesson for me. I learnt about discipline and perseverance, and eventually after a year of giving it my absolute all and training seriously, I finally started to see the results of my hard work, and it felt great!
‘My brother and I continued to train together and because we’re both so passionate about this sport and the healthy lifestyle it promotes, we really wanted to share it with everyone. So we completed all our accreditations and opened our own box (gym) in January 2013.
We’ve introduced so many people to CrossFit, and because all the workouts are scalable to any level of fitness, we’ve trained literally every kind of person at our box. From kids who attend our CrossFit Kids classes, to men and women who’ve never been into gyming and fitness at all, to grandparents who are brave enough to try something new!
