It was rare to get the chance to play a character who pushes the envelope so far; going from being aggressive and ballsy to finding his true soul and heart. I always needed to be cognisant of that transition, so it was a really fun challenge to take on.
What do you enjoy most about action movies?
I do all my own stunts, unless the insurance company won’t allow me to. I like the tension and physicality that comes with doing fight scenes, although on Olympus Has Fallen, I wound up with two cracked ribs and a broken bone in my neck. But apart from that, I like playing tougher kinds of roles.
You started out as a trainee lawyer with a top Edinburgh practice – do you wonder what life would’ve been like if you’d stayed?
