Candice and Joel Berger, and their children Jethro and Lily, live in a home they built two years ago in Simbithi Eco-Estate in Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal.

They’re very forthcoming about the tight budget they had to work with, and are thrilled with the results. “We knew what we wanted, and our architect Mark Leslie-Smith was brilliant with our lean budget,” says Candice. “If we overspent in one area, we had to underspend somewhere else! Equally, where we’d budgeted for Caesarstone or granite in the kitchen, using concrete instead was a significant saving... and allowed us more leeway elsewhere.”
