The Poor Relation?
Fancy Fowl|August 2017

When putting the Alan James feature together, I was touched by one of his comments. So much so that I posted it on Social Media to an overwhelming and immediate response. I posted: "I have just done an interview with a breeder and one of his answers struck a chord with me. He said: "Many people think that the bantams are the 'be all and end all' of the breed and the large are the poor relation. What are your thoughts concerning your breed? Is that the case?” Below are some of your replies...

When you look at LF Brahmas and bantams there's just no competition! The bigger the better I say but I've always been a LF lover so I guess I'm biased. To each their own.

I would LOVE to breed and show LF but simply don't have the land to do it on.

In about 10 years from now I fear that there will be no LF Wyandottes left in the Netherlands. People do want smaller, so they can have more on the small spot left for birds.

Love Large Fowl, but it’s now very noticeable at shows - the entries are way smaller. Guess many Fanciers think the high cost of feed and the space required is too much… but they are lovely!

Lee Pedley

Poultry is frequently a numbers game. To make progress you often have to hatch as many as you can. Hatching bantams in large numbers is easier on available space and costs less. There are dedicated large breeders out there but with limited gene pools it can make it harder again. I've almost entirely changed from being a breeder of bantams to now mainly focusing on large. It's meant less breeds and variations but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make because large fowl need the support, or else in some breeds they'll soon be gone for good.

Anthony Ashwin

The LF should be the template for the bantam. I find it strange when a breed has different colour breed clubs and loads go to championship row, when in the Asian breeds only one LF and one bantam goes up from all the breeds in the Asian section.

What is Rare?

It would be accurate to say that many breeders and fanciers are currently concerned about their particular breed in terms of how it is regarded officially, and some may be unaware of who is looking after their interests as far as protection measures go in the face of any government-imposed cull.
