Drake's Take

RC Car Action: When did you start in RC?

Adam Drake: I had RC cars when I was really young around the late ’80s or early ’90s. My brother and I grew up racing motocross, and we always had RC cars around to play with, especially when we were at the motocross races. Then I started racing RC in ’91 in electric. I raced electric exclusively till around ’97, ’98, when I started racing nitro. Then there was a pretty long span where I raced both 1/10-scale electric and 1/8-scale nitro. Then around 2005 or 2006, I started racing just nitro.

You are known as a nitro guy now. Is it because of your sponsors, or is it something you prefer?

I prefer nitro over electric, but I do miss 1/10-scale electric because it’s clean, it’s nice, and you can runindoors—especially nowadays with the ease of brushless and LiPo batteries. But it really got where it was too much to do both. With my travel schedule—and I do a lot more of the smaller, regional races now—it got to where I couldn’t do both at the level I wanted and put the effort in. It was something that was instilled in me by my parents, who taught me that if I’m going to do something, do it right. At the time when I was doing both, I was still with Losi, so I decided to set the electric stuff aside.

You were with Losi for a long time, what made you go to Mugen Seiki?
