In either case, it took a great amount of concentration to envision how we wanted the outcome to be. We all wanted to grow up strong, capable of doing many wonderous things, and most of all, be able to stand our grounds.
With the help of Mark Tannacore, AMM attempted to see the phenomenon of the superheroes who inspired us all to always be little more than what our earthbound, aging, bill-managing selves could be. Feeling a little adventurous today?
The interview:
AMM - How do you deal with copyrights for things like this? Can you sell your work or get them published?
Mark - Well, of course I can sell original works. But even with the other comic related stuff, I can sell prints. See, the major comic book companies are pretty cool about it. They know that most artists have to make a living outside the comic field, and allow such artists to sell prints, with the condition that the artist created the print himself/herself. They aren’t so liberal with other mediums though (understandably), like t-shirts and whatnot, but the prints are fine (I don’t sell prints of immediately recognizable characters anyway. The closest is Godzilla, but that’s mostly because some of my art is based upon/inspired by Godzilla. Only one actual piece is of the Japanese Godzilla. I have yet to sell any Godzilla related prints though, and when I redo the site, the ‘for sale’ stuff is going to be gone. It’s easier and safer (legally) to stick to commission work as far as selling art goes.
“Superheroes allow us to experience, vicariously, all (or many) of the things we ourselves wish we could do, or could be. In a largely insecure world, comics, especially the superhero genre, speaks to many of us. From pre-adolescents to the ‘kid in me’ adults.”
