Blending elements of hip-hop with R&B, soul and cosmic jazz, his tracks sit at the point where vintage funk meets modern beat-making. With his new album Rare Pleasure out now, we caught up with him to talk studio workflow, mixing tips and keeping fresh energy.
When did you start making music?
“Around 2001-2002, I started messing around with Fruity Loops after my older brother showed me the ropes. The computer was all I needed to start but eventually, I got my mom to buy me Midiman Keystation49 off of eBay and that definitely opened up the workflow a bit. All I was interested in making at the time was hip-hop beats, trying to sound like my favourite golden era hip-hop producers.”
Tell us about your studio…
“At one point I did try to rent out a studio space so that I could leave the house to work. That lasted about a month before I decided the home atmosphere was the best place to get into certain headspace.
“My setup is a balanced marriage of hardware and software. I love the vast flexibility of VSTs but my studio wouldn’t be complete without a couple outboard synths or keyboards.
