Should We Support ‘996' Working Hour System?
China Africa (English)|February 2021
With the rapid development of Chinese society, the work culture at companies has also changed, accompanied by the increasing pressure of competition. The “996” working hour system, which refers to working 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. six days a week, has become a common practice adopted by Internet and financial companies in big cities.
Should We Support ‘996' Working Hour System?

Recently, a 22-year-old female employee of a Chinese Internet company died suddenly on her way home from work at 1:30 a.m. This incident once again triggered debate and concerns about the overwork culture of some companies.

Some people feel content with the “996” system, while others resent it. Supporters say if we want to live a better life and develop a career, it seems that there is no other way but to accept it. Opponents argue that this kind of work system does not comply with the law, and is also harmful to health.

Everyone has the right to choose their own way of work and life. It is understandable if someone chooses a relaxed working environment and is not willing to put in extra effort, but then you may not get the happiness and rewards brought by working hard. Of course, there are many people who have worked hard, but with no return. Hard work may not necessarily lead to success, but without hard work, there will definitely be no success.
