A COUNTY Derry cycling group has been commended for its fundraising efforts to cancer support charity, Macmillan.
For the past ten years, Carn Wheelers have helped raise over £70,000 for the charity from their annual sportive, Tour of South Derry.
The group recently presented Macmillan with £8090.94, the proceeds from their latest Tour of South Derry event which was held back in October, bringing the group’s total donations over the past decade to £74,868.14.
In return, Carn Wheelers received special recognition from Macmillan commending the group for its continued support.
It has also just been revealed to the group that they have been nominated for a prestigious Macmillan volunteering award.
The first Tour of South Derry, which took place in 2007, was the brainchild of Mickey Donnelly and Brendan Niblock.
Macmillan Cancer Support was a cause close to Mickey’s heart. He had previously undertook a charity cycle but keen to organise a group cycle, Mickey and Brendan approached Carn Wheelers, who got on-board with the idea.
