Global Climate Change: Climacteric For India

These shifts, when caused naturally [due to continental drift, volcanism, and changes in earth's orbit], like the solar cycle, are of no concern. However, what has been seen today is the result of human activities like greenhouse gas emissions, atmospheric aerosols, shifts in land use patterns, and others since the 1800s and is of greater concern to the global nations as it is causing periodic fluctuations in the earth's climate. India also has similar repercussions as the rest of the world regarding climate change.

Climate Change can be evidently seen with the following events or changes happening around the globe: Rise of global temperatures [the earth is now 1.1degree C warmer than it was in the 1800s], warming oceans, shrinking ice sheets, the rise of sea levels, declining Arctic Sea ice, the record of extreme events like high temperatures or heavy rainfall, and 2020 is one of the hottest years recorded and ocean acidification.

Against this backdrop, it is imperative to understand how different nations across the globe are working together to minimize the impact of climate change by cooperating with each other at various levels. The study focuses on how climate change is critical to India, how climate change can be a game changer in India's foreign policy, and what could be done by India to manage and adapt to climate change.

Climate Change: Potential effects in India

India is no exception in facing the impacts of climate change, as the atmosphere has no boundaries, unlike land. India is among the five most vulnerable countries to climate change, given its huge population, long coastline, poverty levels, and high dependency on natural resources. India has been ranked 7th in a major Climate Risk Index of 2019. The possible impacts of climate change, whose beginning is already witnessed in India, can be as mentioned below:
