Prakash Ambedkar looks to consolidate the state’s divided Dalit and tribal communities
He spearheaded the statewide shutdown after the attacks on Dalits at Koregaon-Bhima (near Pune) on January 1. Now, Prakash Ambedkar, a grandson of the late Dr B.R. Ambedkar and president of the little-known Bharip-Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM) is looking to consolidate Maharashtra’s hitherto politically and socially divided lower caste and tribal communities. Maharashtra had never witnessed such large scale protests by Dalits since January 1992, when the community came together to force the renaming of the Marathwada University after Dr Ambedkar.
