BMC To Blame

On December 30, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) inspected 624 restaurants and bars. Half of them were illegal constructions, and were fully or partially demolished on the same day. The inspection was triggered by the fatal fire at 1Above pub, in Kamala Mills Compound, Lower Parel. Fourteen had died and 21 were injured.

Prateek Thakur, a Dadar businessman, said: “It was only when I raised the alarm that people saw the fire, panicked and ran towards the narrow exit. There was no fire exit.” He suffered five per cent burns when he went back in to look for his wife; she had also escaped, but got separated. “I am sure that the fire was started by a hookah,” said Thakur, who is recuperating in a private hospital.

But anyone who encountered her, even briefly, was in such awe of her grace and poise, and one could not but remember her forever.

India is not a controlling big brother

Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay considers India a benevolent elder sibling as the \"big brotherly attitude\" is happily missing from bilateral ties. He thinks the relationship shared by the two countries has become a model of friendship not just for the region, but for the entire world. \"India's attitude is definitely not of a big brother who is controlling and does not allow the little brother to blossom and grow,\" says Tobgay in an exclusive interview with THE WEEK.
