The Doshi Touch

The Doshi Touch

A stream of visitors arrive, at his Ahmedabad home, to con-gratulate Balkrishna V. Doshi on becoming the first Indian to win the 2018 Pritzker Architecture Prize. The 90-year-old legend attends to each of them, with much warmth.

Winner of the ‘Nobel Prize of architecture’, Doshi has designed the Aranya low-cost housing scheme in Indore, IIM-Bangalore, the Tagore Hall in Ahmedabad and the Husain-Doshi Gufa (now called Ahmedabad ni Gufa), among other structures, over a career spanning 60 years. And yet, he humbly tells THE WEEK that he still does not feel he is cut out for architecture. “Everything has happened by chance. I learnt the craft of design, not architecture,” said Doshi.
