Skill development is one of the key priorities of Government of India, with the objective to develop skill sets linked to employability. Most traditional vocational training programmes focus only on technical skills, rather than on ‘green’ skills. Green skills contribute to preserving or restoring the quality of the environment for a sustainable future and lead to jobs that protect ecosystems and biodiversity, increase efficiency in energy consumption, and minimize waste and pollution.
In line with the Skill India Mission, a Green Skill Development Programme (GSDP), conducted by TERI ENVIS Resource Partner, under the umbrella of ENVIS in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, trained unemployed youth (including the 10th and 12th dropouts) about solar energy technologies in a 6-week residential course titled ‘Sustain and Enhance Technical Knowledge in Solar Energy Systems’. The course aims to make the participants self-reliant and employable, such that they can earn a decent living.
Pre-Course Activities
Kanpur was chosen as the venue for training in order to maximize outcome, outreach, and utilization of knowledge by local youths. Shramik Bharti, a notfor-profit, grassroots development organization working dedicatedly for sustainable causes, was also roped in as the local partner for conducting the residential course.
The training course module was modified as per the feedback received during the earlier courses and the opinions from experts of various fields were also incorporated. Additional topics like waste management, computer science, taxation, entrepreneurship, gender sensitization, apart from solar technology, were included to make the module more comprehensive.
