As we get closer to April, and closer to the start of the County Championship season, another T20 tournament looms.
The Indian Premier League has found its home in April and May, with many stars flocking to Asia to earn a pretty penny while playing the shortest format of the game.
Of course, for most, it won’t be the first time this winter/spring that they’ve played T20 cricket. We’ve already had the Big Bash, Bangladesh Premier League, Pakistan Super League and then the Hong Kong Blitz.
This is excluding international T20 cricket, but is it becoming a case of too much T20?
New Durham chairman Sir Ian Botham once said: “If you keep watching your favourite film every night it soon becomes your least favourite film. So watch out – they will kill the goose that lays the golden egg.
“T20 has got a place to play, but I think it should be played once every four years internationally.
“I think you should play as a franchise and at county level because it generates a lot of money and brings youngsters through the turnstiles.
“But we’ve got too much international cricket – then why play T20 internationals – just keep it as a special, once every four years World Cup.”
Botham’s comments came just as West Indies beat England in the final over of the 2016 World T20, two years after Sri Lanka beat India in the previous final. The 2018 tournament, which has yet to be confirmed with talks still ongoing, would be the seventh global T20 tournament.
