Smith said: “The game was decided by one decision by the official.
“Canos won the ball cleanly in the tackle then four of five Derby players surrounded the referee.
“Peter Bankes told me he gave the red card for excessive force – but how else can you make a tackle on a pitch as greasy as that?
“No way was it a sending off and we will be appealing.
“We’d had the better chances before that when there were two evenly-matched sides.
