When my father came to this country from Pakistan he told me one thing: “You never, ever scrounge. You never claim benefits. You work.” He spent his life leading by that example.
He never took a holiday and he took one day off a year – Christmas Day.
He was my hero.
Night after night at our dinner table he would say: “I worked with my hands so you can work with your brain.”
As I write this, I can still see him telling me, pointing at the sky with his pen. “This is my gift to you.”
So that is what I’m going to continue to do – use my pen. No matter the odds and no matter how long it takes. That’s what my father would have wanted.
Today, bankers are still seen as one of the least trusted professions and it’s no surprise to me. I want to help the banks see the error of their ways, so as history threatens to repeat itself and we are trapped in another recession not of our making, the same mistakes made on me will not be made again.
I am more worried than ever that what happened to me and hundreds of other Brits might happen again.
