“The men’s 400-metre Sri Lanka record I set 22 years ago has still not been broken. I am happy about this personally. However, as someone who loves athletics, I cannot be happy that this record has stood for so many years without being broken. That is if you are thinking of the present state of athletics and future of the sport in the country. Further no one has been able to run the 400 metres in under 45 seconds from 1998 to 2020 since I achieved this feat more than two decades ago. I don’t know whether it is due to lack of skilled athletes or not having good coaches. In this backdrop, I doubt whether Sri Lanka could aim for medals at Asian, World Championships or Olympics,” said Thilakaratne.
One of the finest sprinters to emerge in the 1990s, Thilakaratne clocked 44.61 seconds in the 400 metres at the Asian Athletic Championship in Fukuoka, Japan in 1998 to set a new Sri Lanka and Championship record.
