CHELSEA was today pleading with the Government to relax restrictions imposed on it after its financial future was thrown into chaos by sanctions on owner Roman Abramovich.
The Premier League club fears it will be forced out of business unless the Government changes the terms of a licence granted yesterday to allow it to continue to operate.
It is understood the current restrictions have presented the club with “significant challenges” amid speculation it will struggle to complete the season as things stand. Talks between government officials and the club were continuing today after Mr Abramovich was added to the UK’s sanctions list over links to Vladimir Putin following the Russian president’s invasion of Ukraine.
He was one of seven new Russian oligarchs to have their assets frozen, pausing Mr Abramovich’s urgent efforts to sell the club, valued at up to £4 billion, and barring the sale of future tickets, players and merchandise.
