As India’s COVID-19 cases crossed one million after a whooping rise of nearly 35,000 cases on Thursday, reports emerged that the human trial of Bharat Biotech’s anti-COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin which began at Rohtak’s Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences on Friday is proceeding on a positive note.
The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in Patna is also testing the vaccine.
Haryana health minister Anil Vij tweeted the positive news: “Human trial with Corona vaccine (COVAXIN) of Bharat Biotech started at PGI Rohtak today. Three subjects were enrolled today. All have tolerated the vaccine very well. There were no adverse effects.” India has set an Aug.15 deadline to release the vaccine, which could perhaps become the world’s first. Covaxin has been derived from a strain of the novel coronavirus isolated by the National Institute of Virology in Pune. Bharat Biotech developed an “inactivated” vaccine at its high-containment facility at Genome Valley in Hyderabad under the supervision of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
