India announced on Saturday a major relaxation of the world’s biggest coronavirus lockdown from early June, except for so-called “containment zones” with high numbers of infections.
A home ministry order said that places of religious worship, hotels, restaurants and shopping malls “will be allowed” to operate from June 8, while educational establishments will be opened “after consultations” with Indian state authorities.
The announcement came even after the world’s second-most populous country announced another record single-day jump of 7,964 coronavirus cases and 265 deaths on Saturday. India, which started easing lockdown restrictions earlier this month, has confirmed 173,763 cases of the coronavirus, including 5,000 deaths.
The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) announced 726 new coronavirus cases and two deaths on Saturday.
In a news briefing on Saturday Dr Amna Al Shamsi, UAE government spokesperson, said that the UAE health authorities have conducted additional 42,000 COVID-19 tests, which revealed 726 new cases, bringing the total number of cases to 33,896.
