Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday accused Kerala’s ruling Let Democratic Front (LDF) of attempting to destabilise places of worship through their “agents.”
Addressing an election rally of his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Pathanamthitta district, where the famed Sabarimala temple is located, he said BJP workers will resist it.
The hill shrine where fertile women are not welcome was at the centre of dispute when police escorted those who wanted to break the tradition after a court verdict two years back.
“At first, they tried to portray the culture of Kerala as regressive and then they tried destabilising places of worship by sending their agents,” Modi said.
“The devotees of Lord Ayyappa, who should have been welcomed so warmly, were welcomed with lathis. The innocent devotees of Lord Ayyappa are not criminals.”
Hindus at large believe the temple is the abode of the “bachelor god” Ayyappa who does not want to meet women aged between 10 to 50 years.
