ASIAN Games gold medallist Amit Panghal added yet another feather to his cap by becoming the first Indian male boxer to reach the final of AIBA Men’s World Championships in Ekaterinburg, Russia on Friday. Manish Kaushik (63kg), however, could not join his compatriot as he lost his semi-final and had to settle for the bronze.
Uzbekistan’s reigning Olympic gold medallist Shakhobidin Zoirov now stands between Panghal (52kg) and the highly-coveted gold medal on Saturday.
Previously four Indian pugilists including Vijender Singh, Vikas Krishan, Shiva Thapa and Gaurav Bidhuri have medalled at this prestigious tournament. However, none of them could secure a medal better than a bronze.
Panghal’s 3-2 win over Kazakhstan’s Saken Bibossinov in the semis has ensured that he gets at least a silver medal. This is also the first time more than one Indian boxer will be on the podium at a single edition of the World Championships.
