Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday said the Union Cabinet had given a nod to a total ban on sale and manufacture of e-cigarettes. This will help unclog the Capital’s lungs, especially those of school students, as the consumption of e-cigarettes, ‘vaping’ in popular lingo, has become a fad among many city teenagers.
In the recent past, school authorities in the Capital had complained about grappling with a growing number of students getting addicted to vaping. A couple of months ago, a surprise inspection at a prominent school in East Delhi led to the confiscation of vaping pens from many students.
The matter had reached the courts, as well. In July, the Delhi High Court directed the Aam Aadmi Party government to “urgently” examine the issue of regulating sale and consumption of e-cigarettes. The Delhi government, in an affidavit filed before the court last year, had indicated it was considering a ban on the sale of e-cigarettes.
Concerned over the growing trend of e-cigarette use among kids, Dr SK Arora, Delhi government’s Additional Director (Health), recently wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlining the need to create a chapter on tobacco-control in school curriculum from standard 6th to 12th under CBSE state boards to protect the vulnerable younger generation from the menace of e-cigarettes.
“This is a welcome decision. But it is no time to relax. All enforcement agencies have to be on their toes, otherwise spurious products may enter the market and may do more harm,” Arora tweeted on Wednesday, soon after the ban was announced.
