President Duterte spoke to Xi Thursday night, June 11, with the Chinese leader praising Duterte's leadership in handling the coronavirus outbreak, and touted the friendship of their respective countries amid the global health crisis.
China and the Philippines celebrated the 45th year anniversary of their diplomatic relations last June 9.
“I am glad to see that under your leadership, the Philippines has introduced a series of strong prevention and control measures and achieved positive results,” the Chinese embassy in Manila quoted Xi as telling Duterte.
“Under your strong leadership, China has not only successfully controlled the pandemic itself, but also generously extended a helping hand to partners such as the Philippines,” he added.
Xi said China is “willing to continue to provide firm support to the Philippines according to the needs.”
“China is willing to work closely with the Philippines to support the international community in uniting against the epidemic,” he added.
